1. Describe the strategy used in the opening to engage the audience and build the author’s credibility. Is it effective?
2. List as many assumptions as you can that the author is making about the audience.
3. Where do you see insufficient background of the issue to help the audience understand the main points of the essay?
4. Summarize the main points you found most persuasive for the thesis.
5. Which points are least effective and/or least clear?
6. Where could the use of quotes be more effective, either for supporting the arguments or making the author sound more authoritative?
7. Identify any places where you think the author is turning over the writing of the paper too much to the quoted authors.
8. Explain how you think the audience is to be affected by this essay and how you think this effort could be more effective.
